Muff Chain

The muff chain became popular in the 18th century as a functional and aesthetically pleasing means of securing a muff, worn by Victorian women to keep their hands warm through the winter. Also known as a guard or a longuard chain, this long and often intricate piece was worn once or doubled around the neck and attached to both ends of the muff, and made in every imaginable iteration, to suit all tastes. It occasionally also carried other practical objects, such as keys, scissors, watches, or more sentimental ones, such as lockets.
